Departmental Application for Graduate Studies

Departmental Acceptance Criteria for Graduate Studies

  1. A candidate for admission should be adequately prepared for taking graduate physics courses. In the past, successful candidates usually have had an A or B in each of the following four standard junior/senior undergraduate physics courses:
Mechanics (e.g., PHYS 3210 at UNT*)
Statistical and Thermal Physics (e.g., PHYS 4110 at UNT*)
Electricity and Magnetism (e.g., PHYS 4210 at UNT*)
Quantum Mechanics (e.g., PHYS 4310 at UNT*)
*or an equivalent course or pair of courses at another university. Students who do not meet these course grade minima on multiple courses may be admitted as graduate non-degree seeking students in order to retake some of these courses during their first semester in graduate studies at UNT. At the end of the semester, a non-degree seeking student can request to be reconsidered for admission into a physics graduate degree program by filling out this form. Instructions on applying for admission as a graduate non-degree seeking student are found at: https://tsgs.unt.edu/future-students/graduate-admissions/other-graduate-opportunities
  2. A candidate for admission should have adequate reasoning and communications skills. In the past, successful candidates usually have met certain GRE or GPA minima:* 152 GRE Quantitative Reasoning score and at least one of the following:
    147 GRE Verbal Reasoning score
    3.5 GRE Analytical Writing score
2.8 GPA in the undergraduate degree
3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of the undergraduate degree
3.5 GPA in a graduate degree
*Exceptions might be considered on a case-by-case basis by holistic review of research accomplishment. A candidate for admission may optionally submit (to physics@unt.edu) a description of their research experience, conference presentations and publication record.
  3. The department might ask you to request that letters of recommendation be sent (to physics@unt.edu). Two letters of recommendation are typically required if you apply for and are being considered for a Teaching Assistantship. Free-form letters of recommendation are acceptable. Alternatively, our fillable form can be used: http://physics.unt.edu/graduate-studies/admissions/letter-reference
