Department Acceptance Criteria

Physics Prospective Applicant Admission Criteria

1. Prospective Students need to complete the general application requirements for the UNT Toulouse Graduate School.

2. UNT requires international students to demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English. UNT requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (213) (79) or IELTS score of 6.5 for prospective students to be considered for admission to all Graduate Programs. For employment purposes international students will be required to complete an English proficiency test upon arrival to the Physics Department.

3. In order to satisfy the requirements for the standardization admission test, prospective students are required to take the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The Department of Physics recommends a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of at least 640 Quantitative, and 3.5 Analytical (4.0 for students with a Master's degree). For tests taken on or after Aug 1, 2011, the recommended minimum quantitative score is 152.

4. Transcripts must show you have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and earned the required grade point average:

GPA requirement for UNT consideration:

  • 2.8 GPA or higher on your undergraduate degree OR
  • 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of your undergraduate degree OR

GPA on a completed master's degree.

Students not meeting GPA requirements may be eligible for admission under certain conditions or if they are seeking a second bachelor's degree. See the Graduate Catalog for details.

5. Submit a written statement of purpose including the applicant's applied interests, field or laboratory experience, career plans, and discussion of how the Physics program can serve to further these interests and plans.

6. 2 letters of reference send to the Graduate Studies Coordinator.
