Abstract: Acoustic Scattering: From Rayleigh to Metamaterials

The scattering of acoustic waves from objects is as beautiful as it is complex. Studying this field, you begin to realize why so many prominent scientist, notably Lord Rayleigh, were drawn to figuring out its intricacies. This seminar will cover a brief history of acoustics and scattering and the chronological timeline that led us to today. Fundamentals of acoustic scattering will be covered together with more challenging concepts. The next big chapter in acoustic scattering came due to the promise of acoustic metamaterials. These extraordinary materials control waves in unnatural ways, which led to explosive interest in studying them over the last two and a half decades. The seminar will conclude with a discussion about the difficulties associated with measuring acoustic scattering and the world-class facilities that NSWC Carderock has.
